A reported 22%–58% of patients with cancer experience distress that can occur at any point along the clinical course, and it can interfere with their ability to cope well with cancer, its physical symptoms, and treatment. Oncology nurses can teach patients about mind-body approaches such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), and mindfulness to help self-manage distress and guide them to resources for mind-body practices.

The BTK inhibitor ibrutinib is one of the first 10 drugs covered under Medicare Part D eligible for price negotiation authorized through the Inflation Reduction Act, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced in August 2023. Together, the 10 drugs accounted for 20% of Medicare Part D prescription drug costs during the 12-month period used to identify the initial group of negotiable agents. Medicare enrollees taking the 10 drugs covered under Part D selected for negotiation paid a total of $3.4 billion in out-of-pocket costs for the drugs in 2022.

When we use the term “trauma,” we’re often referring to experiences like war, being attacked or assaulted, or witnessing a terrible tragedy. However, other traumas can be just as harmful. Patients with cancer may have experienced multiple kinds of trauma throughout their lives, which can contribute to myriad challenges such as chronic health problems, mental illness, and difficulty seeking care.

WASHINGTON, DC—August 31, 2023—Eleven ONS members were honored among the highly distinguished nurse leaders inducted into the American Academy of Nursing’s 2023 Class of Fellows. In total, the Academy will recognize 253 inductees—its largest cohort to date—at its annual conference on October 5–7, 2023, in Washington, DC.

When Ethan was 15 years old, he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma. He underwent chemotherapy and was deemed cancer free for nearly 10 years. Maria, an advanced oncology certified nurse, worked closely with Ethan’s healthcare team throughout his treatment. She got to know Ethan, his sense of humor, and his dreams of becoming a child psychologist.

When summer ends in the northern hemisphere and the autumnal equinox ushers in fall on September 23, 2023, the earth begins to tilt away from the sun, making the nights grow longer and days shorter until the winter solstice. Those of us working 12-hour shifts especially notice the decrease in daylight, coming to and leaving our workplaces in darkness.
