In response to public health concerns from the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. government, healthcare institutions, and payors rapidly developed new policies and procedures to address the changing landscape.

As your professional home, the ONS Board of Directors took steps to begin evaluating the changes and the effect they will have on the future of oncology nursing and clinical practice. A summary of that discussion, as well as other key topics from the May 26 and June 4, 2020, Board meetings, follows.

Practice Changes From COVID-19

During the June meeting, the ONS Board discussed the challenges that oncology nurses are experiencing while implementing the many practice changes because of COVID-19, including which specialty roles are most affected, the pandemic’s long-term effects on oncology nursing and cancer care, and the practice and advocacy areas ONS should focus on to support members. To ensure that ONS develops the resources to best meet oncology nurses’ needs, the Board will solicit feedback from chapters and members.

Chapter Policy Manual Revisions

During the May meeting, the Board discussed a proposal to begin automatic approvals for chapter charter renewals each year. Staff would monitor adherence to the guidelines by reviewing annual chapter reports and financial statements. Chapters that do not meet the minimum performance criteria would be referred to the Board of Directors for further action. Maintenance updates to the handbook reflect new roles, technology, virtual meetings, and link references. The Board moved to adopt all of the changes discussed.

Partnership and Coalition Memberships

Annually, the ONS Board reviews the Society’s formal partnerships and liaisons. During the June meeting, ONS staff provided recommendations for ONS’s 2021 partnership and coalition memberships. The Board approved continuing and discontinuing membership in specific organizations as outlined in the review. View ONS’s partnership list at ons.org/about-ons/partnerships.
