PITTSBURGH, PA—November, 13, 2019—Support for oncology nursing is critical to the advancement of the profession and the future of care for patients with cancer. The Oncology Nursing Foundation—formerly known as the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Foundation—is a nonprofit, tax-exempt, charitable organization dedicated solely to supporting oncology nurses both nationally and internationally. Today, the Foundation announced its name change to wholly encapsulate the organization’s longstanding focus and goals. Through continuing education scholarships, research grants, and career development funding, the Oncology Nursing Foundation supports oncology nurses in their pursuits to provide safer and more effective cancer care for their patients.

“Since the Foundation’s inception, the oncology nurse has been at the core of what we support,” Linda Worrall, RN, MSN, executive director of the Oncology Nursing Foundation, said. “Our name change better reflects the constituency that the Foundation has always supported and emphasized—oncology nurses.”

Through more than 35 years of service, the Foundation has awarded more than $27 million to oncology nurses and nursing initiatives. With the help of generous donor contributions, the Oncology Nursing Foundation provides funding for research grants, fellowships, academic scholarships, lectures, public education projects, and career development awards to support the greater oncology nursing community. The Foundation will continue to support oncology nurses to further drive the advancement of the oncology nursing profession and the care of patients with cancer.

“This name better reflects what has always been the Foundation’s mission: supporting oncology nurses in cancer nursing excellence,” Oncology Nursing Foundation President Cynthia LeBlanc, EdD, said. “Strengthening oncology nursing education, research initiatives, and leadership development will ultimately improve the lives of oncology nurses and every patient in their care.”

Since 1981, the Foundation has provided more than $27 million to fund local and national oncology nursing education, research and leadership opportunities. In partnership with the oncology nurses we serve, the Oncology Nursing Foundation has impacted the lives of countless patients with cancer, their caregivers and their families.
