NINR Asks Nurses for Meaning of Research
What does the future of nursing research mean to you? How can nurse scientist-led studies provide information you can use in your daily practice? What gaps do you see in evidence to support nursing care?
The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) is seeking insight from nurse researchers (https://www.ninr.nih.gov/nursing-research-means-to-you) through a brief survey in honor of the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife (https://voice.ons.org/news-and-views/every-year-is-the-year-of-the-nurse). The NINR survey is open until August 31, 2020.
“We are gathering this information to learn more from our community and collectively begin describing the next frontiers in nursing science,” NINR’s website states (https://www.ninr.nih.gov/nursing-research-means-to-you). “Tell us how you would explain nursing research to someone outside the field, such as a neighbor, family member, or friend. Picture the future of nursing research in 5 or 10 years and share your vision.”
In 1986, NINR was originally established (https://www.ninr.nih.gov/aboutninr/history) as the National Center for Nursing Research (NCNR). NCNR was elevated to an NIH institute in 1993 and has supported and conducted research since its inception.
“NINR seeks to extend nursing science by integrating the biological and behavioral sciences, employing new technologies to research questions, improving research methods, and developing the scientists of the future,” the institute’s website states (https://www.ninr.nih.gov/aboutninr/history).

How fitting that the World Health Organization designated 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife (https://www.who.int/news-room/campaigns/year-of-the-nurse-and-the-midwife-2020), raising global awareness of nurses.
