The Fitzpatrick Classification System Determines How Much UV Protection Is Needed to Prevent Sun Exposure

The Answer

The answer is True. Developed in 1975 by Thomas Fitzpatrick, MD, the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Classification system (https://www.ons.org/books/your-guide-cancer-prevention) provides a ranking from 1-6 describing the typical reaction to sun exposure. Those with a skin type of 1 always burn and never tan, whereas type 6 usually never burns and never tans. Individuals with skin type of 1 or 2 need more UV protection and may be at higher risk of skin cancer. However, individuals who rank higher on the scale (5-6) can still get skin cancer and all individuals should use routine sun protection and have regular skin exams.
