Your ONS Board of Directors met face to face in January for a rich and productive meeting. Following are highlights from our discussions.

Goals for 2017

We reviewed our 2017 goals and the tactics planned to meet them, including the progress made on the strategic plan. We added information about our work with the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative as well as legislative activities that support cancer prevention and treatment. Our goal is to get information on our health policy work to chapter leaders at the regional officer meetings so that they can relay it to their chapter members.

We are increasing our transparency to ONS members by writing these articles, being more visible at Congress, and attending regional meetings. We are working with the Leadership Development Committee to create strategies focused on growing and developing future ONS leaders. In addition, we will have specific sessions during Leadership Weekend focused on leadership development. Finally, we will work with millennial members to make sure we are meeting their needs.

Evaluations and Position Descriptions

One of our goals is to look at different models of board evaluations. Before the meeting, we each completed a self-evaluation; at the meeting, we conducted face-to-face peer evaluations with opportunities to discuss strengths as well as areas for growth. The process went very smoothly, and everyone agreed that it was beneficial in helping to guide topics for ongoing leadership development activities for the Board.

Finally, we streamlined the Board position descriptions and incorporated the new bylaw changes. We hope that this will make it easier for members interested in Board leadership to get a good idea of what is involved in that work. Look for them soon on the ONS website.

The ONS Board works diligently to meet the needs of our members while supporting cancer care throughout the disease trajectory. We are always open to hearing from members and look forward to seeing many of you at the 42nd Annual Congress, being held May 4–7, 2017, in Denver, CO. Our members and staff are organizing a phenomenal event, and your ONS Board hopes to see you there!

I want to thank you for placing the update on the focus areas discussed during the January 2017 board meeting and pointing out areas in which ONS is committed to move forward on.
I like your idea of promoting leadership and some of us who are clinical perhaps are unaware that we are leaders in some way shape or form. I would encourage that ONS partner with AONE as they already have course work established to provide knowledge for formal leaders. Instead of having ONS re-invent the wheel on its own, perhaps ONS board can reach out to AONE to take advantage of what they have to offer in respects to leadership training or invite their trainers to an ONS Congress workshop.
Also, I have been very involved at a local chapter level, but perhaps you can have available on the ONS website how local chapter leaders can move up to a national position and recommended positions to start off with in order to "get their feet wet" and move up the leadership ladder (if that is a professional goal) on a national level.
Thank you.
