As ONS enters 2020 celebrating both its 45th anniversary and the World Health Organization’s Year of the Nurse, the ONS Board of Directors is positioning the Society for a tremendous year. For its first meeting on January 28, 2020, the Board discussed a number of items critical to its mission and the future of oncology nursing.

Leadership Development Committee

The Board reviewed the committee nominees that they had ranked before the call. Barbara Gobel, MS, RN, AOCN®, FAAN, and Marlon Saria, PhD, RN, AOCNS®, FAAN, were appointed to a three-year term beginning in May 2020.

Oncology Nursing Specialty Position

The Board approved the draft Oncology Nursing Specialty Position Statement that incorporated the workforce position language and compared it to the newly published Oncology Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice book. The new position statement will be published in the March issue of the Oncology Nursing Forum.

2020–2022 ONS Strategic Plan

The Board approved the draft 2020–2022 strategic priorities descriptors and accepted them as outlined.

Leadership Assessment Feedback

Two of the areas the annual leadership performance evaluation addressed involved Board visibility through avenues such as social media, town halls, and virtual meetings and the need for additional transparency about how and why the Board makes its financial decisions. The Board will discuss strategies to address these during its future meetings.
