The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have opened a demonstration project in an effort to streamline the provision of care and the reimbursement processes associated with cancer care.

Beginning July 1, 2016, and running through 2021, the Oncology Care Model (OCM) will work with certain physician group practices in chemotherapy administration to patients with cancer. Participating groups can be found listed by CMS

According to CMS, “OCM aims to promote whole practice transformation through the use of aligned financial incentives, including performance-based payments, to improve care coordination, appropriateness of care, and access for fee-for service of Medicare beneficiaries undergoing chemotherapy. The model intends to improve health outcomes and produce higher quality care at the same for lower cost to Medicare.”

For questions about the model, or to contact the CMS OCM Team, visit their website or email OncologyCareModel@cms.hhs.gov. More details about the OCM are available at its website.
